Privacy policies and the Google Play Store
In January 2024, we communicated that Google would be strengthening their privacy policy requirements for financial apps with a completion date of March 31, 2024.
Since then, many financial institutions submitted their privacy policy links for our review and our mobile deployment team has been working closely with Google on determining what digital privacy policies would most likely pass their criteria. We want to share that input (below) from Google with you, since these new requirements will now be enforced.
Privacy policy feedback from Google
Based on the review feedback that Google provided regarding a number of updated privacy policies our customers have submitted, please be aware that your digital privacy policy must clearly communicate the following within your website:
- Types of data collected: Transparently list the types of personal information your app collects (e.g., name, address, financial data, device identifiers, location, etc.).
- Purpose of data collected: Explain how the collected data is used to provide and improve app functionality, personalization, marketing, or for other purposes.
- Data sharing: Specify if and with whom the collected data is shared - including Jack Henry (e.g., third-party service providers, affiliates, etc.).
- User choices: Outline the options users have for controlling their data, including access, correction, deletion, or opting out of certain data uses.
- Security measures: Describe the steps taken to protect collected user data.
- Posted within your website: Privacy policies posted exclusively within a PDF may result in rejection from Google.
When writing your privacy policy, here are some helpful tips to remember:
- Use plain language: Ditch the legal jargon and write in clear, everyday language that your average user can understand.
- Keep it concise: Focus on the essential points that users need to know. Avoid overly lengthy, complicated explanations.
- Don't hide anything: Be upfront about data collection and practices, even if they may seem sensitive.
Still need help? The Banno Support team is no substitute for a good legal team. 😉 Additionally, you can refer back to the Google Play Developer Policy Center for specific requirements. As a reminder, failure to comply may result in future app rejections.
