Enhance your security with Jack Henry

Security has always been a top priority in the financial industry, and with evolving threats, it remains a critical focus. At Jack Henry, we are committed to keeping our platform secure for all users, constantly implementing the latest technologies and best practices to protect your institution.

However, security is a shared responsibility, and your team plays a vital role in helping your financial institution stay prepared. Here are several key actions you can take to strengthen your defenses and enhance your security posture:

  1. Attend our Security Meetups: We highly recommend that your team joins our quarterly Digital Security Meetup, where our Head of Engineering discusses emerging security trends, statistics, and new security features that can help protect your institution and customers. Learn more and register here.
  2. Use the Messages Tool: If your institution is affected by a security incident, or to proactively remind users of potential security risks, the Messages feature on the Banno Enterprise Platform can be invaluable. For example, you can alert customers if there’s an increase in account takeover attempts. We also recommend scheduling a quarterly security reminder—remember, it’s not “if” but “when.” More information on Messages is available on the Knowledge Base
  3. Implement High-Risk Action Blocking (HRA): Our latest feature empowers you to block high-risk actions by new devices, either preemptively or during a security incident. This tool helps prevent unauthorized actions within your services. Find detailed information on HRA here.

Proactively developing a security plan ensures you’re prepared to act swiftly in the event of a security incident. If you need assistance reviewing these options or creating a plan, please reach out to a member of our team—we’re here to help.

FDIC compliance updates

In a significant move affecting financial institutions, the FDIC has granted more time to comply with recent regulatory changes. On October 17, 2024, the FDIC Board unanimously voted to extend the compliance deadline for the Subpart A Amendments to the FDIC Official Sign and Advertising Rule to May 1, 2025. While this extension provides additional time, we are diligently working to implement the necessary changes ahead of the new deadline. We will continue to provide updates as we get closer. No action or support case is needed at this time.

Banno Usage Data schema change

In the next month, we’ll be making an update to the data schema for Banno Usage Data, formerly Advanced Analytics, that is delivered within BigQuery. This change will provide better efficiency for partitioning, minimize the need for future schema changes, and reduce the potential transaction costs in your GCP project. This update will move most properties into a JSON field in the schema. The update will be fully documented on jackhenry.dev and we will provide the SQL you can use to create a view similar to the current schema to aid in migration of existing reports. No action is needed on your part today and you’ll have time to do any transition before we deprecate the older schema.

Coming soon • Banno Mobile™

Mobile push notification update

As we announced in the August Statement, later this year we will be updating how we send push notifications in Banno Mobile. We are targeting Mobile version 3.19 for this change, which is expected to land in app stores in early December.

Once Mobile version 3.19 rolls out, previous versions will no longer receive push notifications, so it will be critical to ensure your institution is set up to receive the latest versions. We’ll continue to update you, but in the meantime, Ensure you’re set up for auto-app-deployments. If you aren’t, you can follow these steps.

Scope management for API development

Heads up! To enhance security and user privacy, on December 17, 2024, we will begin requiring outlined scopes for all new consumer applications. By explicitly defining the scopes required by each application, we can minimize unnecessary access to user data, thereby mitigating potential issues in the future.

What exactly is an API scope, you might ask? Think of API scopes as gatekeepers for your API. They control which parts of the API are accessible to various users, applications, or systems. This allows you to fine-tune permissions, ensuring that only authorized users can access specific resources or functionalities.

What's changing?

When reviewing or editing an external application's configuration settings in Banno People, you will see a new scope selector. Here's what you need to know about the scope selector:

  • Start date: The implementation start date is December 17, 2024.
  • Adding new apps: Any consumer application added after the start date will require specifically defined scopes to function properly. Your in-house or third-party developers must select only the permissions the app needs to access user data.
  • Using existing apps: All apps created before the start date will be grandfathered in — i.e., these apps can continue to use all scopes without modification.
  • Editing existing apps: If a grandfathered app is edited or altered in any way after the start date, it will lose its grandfathered status. Before saving any changes, your team must define the scopes required and add them to your app's allow list.

What's next?

Before the implementing this security measure, we will provide a list of available scopes, which your developers should review before adding or editing any external application.

No support ticket is necessary for this required enhancement, as we will provide further updates and resources in the November Statement and/or via SLA.

Toolkit corner: Guide on integrating with Accounts and Transactions

It's fairly common to get questions which boil down to "when should I use the Digital Toolkit and when should I use SymXchange or jXchange?"

We now have a way for developers to self-service the answer to that common question. Check it out for yourself!

New feature • Banno People™

Account takeover mitigation

On October 21, we rolled out our new high-risk action blocking features to all institutions. Your employees with the Manage security settings permission now have access to activate this powerful feature set, which contains the following settings:

  1. Allow high-risk actions: This setting reflects your current state. Users experience high-risk challenges and can complete the action if they pass the challenge.
  2. Waitlist new devices: You may be able to leave this setting active. New devices aren’t able to complete high-risk actions during the waitlist period, and the first device registered for a given user isn’t blocked (allowing net-new accountholders to complete necessary actions).
  3. Block all high-risk actions: You may choose to use this setting when you’re experiencing a targeted attack. New devices cannot complete high-risk actions unless verified and unblocked by someone at your financial institution.

For more information, see the High-risk actions section in our Digital Banking Security documentation on the Knowledge Base.

What's next?

Anchor device verification. We’ll be augmenting this set of features with a setting we think you can set and forget. It will block all new devices for users with existing devices (similar to the Waitlist setting) but will enable accountholders with a trusted device to unblock themselves. Additionally, we're working on displaying the list of blocked devices along with reporting to help you understand how this is impacting your institution and user base.

Happy fraud blocking, and keep your eyes peeled for more information as we work to further improve this experience for your employees and accountholders.

Google Play Console: developer account verification

❗️ Action required ❗️

Please note that Google has continued to notify Play Console developer account owners about the new account verification requirement, which must be completed within 60 days of receiving the notice. It is crucial that the account owner completes this verification by the deadline provided by Google. Failure to do so may result in the removal of all published apps and loss of access to the Google Play Developer Account.

Please be aware that Jack Henry Digital support teams cannot assist with account verification or gaining access to your developer profile. For help with this process, contact Google's developer support team directly. If you have already verified your account, no further action is required.

Minimum Android app version support

In order to maintain proper security we only support more recent versions of mobile operating systems. In version 3.19 of Banno we will support Android versions 9 and newer. This change will result in users of older versions being unable to update to the current releases of the mobile app.

Reminder • JHA Treasury Management™

Fight fraud with Treasury Management tools

Fraud attacks rose 15% last year, with 80% of organizations reporting being victims of fraud.* Fraud remains a hot topic in financial circles, and the problem, unfortunately, isn't going away any time soon.

Remember to review your bank policies and procedures to ensure you're doing all you can to protect your companies ... and yourself!

Beyond the standard Check and ACH Positive Pay features, Treasury Management has various alerts and approvals for new users – which helps stop the fraudsters before they can even log in. Double check these settings as well as your Authentication Profiles for high-risk activities that require a challenge.

Positive pay upload file update

We’re updating the submission experience in Positive Pay for Banno Business banks on SilverLake and CIF 20/20 to streamline the workflow and improve processing clarity. Now, when submitting a file on the Add Checks page, users will see a "Submit" button instead of "Review & Approve." A message has also been added to inform users that processing may take some time after submission.

Once submitted, the file’s status will update to "In Progress" on the dashboard and will auto refresh every 5 seconds. When processing completes, the status will change to "Pending," and the "Review & Approve" link will reappear, allowing users to finalize the file for core submission.

Why make this change?

This update helps address occasional delays in uploading and processing files, which could previously lead to system timeouts or display outdated information. By making these changes, we aim to reduce these issues and improve overall user experience.

No action is needed on your part, just make sure to stay tuned to our upcoming statements!

External application configuration for business users

A few months ago, we announced the release of a new feature for our banks with Banno Business – external application permissions for businesses. Along with establishing more granular control, this feature changed how external applications are configured for business users.

Previously, when an external application was configured for business users, that application would show by default for all business users. Today, an authorized admin of either the financial institution or the business must explicitly assign new business users permission to see each external application that they should see.

For more information about this change and how these permissions function, click the Managing external applications reveal arrow in our User management document on the Knowledge Base.

  • A new parameter was added that allows you to choose whether the Overdraft Tolerance Amount on the Share Record is cleared when the user opts out.
  • The existing parameter for the Overdraft Tolerance Amount that is set when the user opts in was modified to allow for more flexibility with setting a global amount in addition to setting amounts for specific share types.

If you are interested in installing or upgrading the Overdraft Tolerance PowerOn to utilize these enhancements, please submit a Support case on the For Clients portal.
