Texas autumn is on hold, but our digital updates are here

The Starbucks sirens have notified me that it is now fall … I’m not sure who decided that, but whoever did clearly didn’t inform the Texas heat. Despite my best efforts to summon fall into existence by drinking chai tea lattes, wrapping myself in microfleece blankets, and stocking my bathroom with acorn-scented hand soap, it’s still a cool 90 degrees outside.

And just like Texas temperatures in September, our digital banking updates and improvements don’t let up one bit. So light a pumpkin spice-scented candle, sip on some apple cider—or heck, go for a hay ride—and enjoy all the fun fall activities while catching up on our latest statement. That way, at least one of us can fully experience the true joy of the season.

Prevent high risk actions on new devices

Very soon, we will be rolling out a suite of settings giving you more control over high-risk activities at your financial institution by targeting new devices -the most common factor in account takeover scenarios:

  1. Allow high-risk actions - This setting reflects your current state: Users experience high-risk challenges and can complete the action if they pass the challenge.
  2. Waitlist new devices - You may be able to leave this setting active: New devices aren’t able to complete high-risk actions during the waitlist period, and the first device registered for a given user isn’t blocked (allowing net-new accountholders to complete necessary actions).
  3. Block all high-risk actions - For when you’re experiencing a targeted attack: New devices cannot complete high-risk actions unless verified and unblocked by someone at your financial institution.

Once available, it requires an employee with the Manage security settings permission to modify the settings in Banno People > Settings > Security and to unblock devices within a user profile.

This set of functionality is currently in beta and will be released to all institutions within a few weeks–no support case needed! To learn more about high-risk actions, check out our documentation on the Knowledge Base!

Identity App for financial institutions

We are excited to announce the upcoming launch of the Identity App, a solution designed to enhance the way financial institutions manage digital identities. The Identity App, part of the Unified Identity Service (UIS), aims to provide a secure, user-friendly application for managing consumer users.

Currently, financial institutions are able to manage security settings such as password resets, 2-step verification, passkeys, and devices in People. At roll out, this functionality can be managed in either People or the Identity App. It is important to note, this functionality will eventually be removed from People.

While we don't currently have any release timelines to share just yet— rest assured we will be communicating more details before that change goes into effect. No support case is needed, just keep an eye out for our updates!

Enhanced Default 2FA methods

We are excited to announce the upcoming release of our enhanced Default Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) methods, designed to provide greater security and flexibility for our financial institutions and their users. As we expand our functionality to meet the needs of both our retail and business users, it is crucial that we offer tailored security measures for different user types, particularly those who may require more stringent security.

In an effort to eliminate confusing, manual configurations, and potential support tickets, we are introducing the concept of Security Levels (pictured above). At roll out, Security Levels will be set to Standard. The institution will then have the control of requiring higher security levels based on user type (retail vs. business). In addition, we are introducing configurable step-up authentication methods for high-risk actions (Passkeys + 2FA OR Passkeys + Password).

As a part of this project, we will be activating all 2FA methods for you. We encourage you to begin testing FIDO keys as soon as possible. To learn more about 2FA methods, passkeys, high-risk actions, and more, check out this Knowledge Base article

View employee data permission

Within the next few weeks, we'll be rolling out the new View employee data permission inside of Users & Groups. Once this permission is available, an authorized admin can create a new group or edit an existing one, assign the View employee data permission (and any others you want the group to have), and then add the appropriate employees whenever necessary. This new permission removes the need to open a support case each time such a change is needed. Keep a lookout for this new permission and the improved control it'll give your teams!

FDIC compliance updates

To ensure all of Digital remains compliant with the latest FDIC requirements, we’re actively working with our compliance team to implement the needed changes.

Banno Mobile and Online, Treasury Management, and NetTeller are working toward required signage on login screens, account detail views, transfers for appropriate accounts, and more. Additionally, we’re working to add the necessary verbiage on non-deposit accounts (as defined by the FDIC) as well as configurable speed bumps when navigating to external applications from Banno.

These updates, for all digital products, will not require any support cases, and we’ll be implementing them for all applicable institutions prior to the January 2025 deadline.
